Justin Ptak was born in Chicago, Illinois. He attended the Ecole Internationale in Geneva, Switzerland. His family then moved on to the French Riviera where he shot his first film at Victorine Studios. He wrote and directed a few acclaimed short films and documentaries. His love of the arts took a backseat as he continued his education in Cambridge, Massachusetts at Harvard University, but all the while still carrying the influences of Vigo, Bresson, Godard, Antonioni, and Fellini. He moved to Providence, RI to work in the fields of art, music, economics, technology, and film.
The JPA can trace its lineage back to the early days of H. J. Whitley's "Hauling Wood" and the H.N. Swanson Agency. Swanny's dominance is illustrated by the fact that by 1939 his client list included 80 writers working for Twentieth Century Fox. At one time, he represented F. Scott Fitzgerald, William Faulkner, Pearl Buck, Raymond Chandler, Elmore Leonard, John O'Hara, Joyce Carol Oates, and Paul Theroux. Among the many books he sold to the studios were The Postman Always Rings Twice, The Big Sleep, Old Yeller, Butterfield 8 and The Mosquito Coast.
